Big Almaty Gorge Circuit Trek

This 5-day trekking program takes you deep into the heart of Ile Alatau National Park, just outside Almaty.

The route follows ancient shepherd paths and mountain trails through wild gorges, alpine meadows, and over high passes, revealing the dramatic contrasts of the Northern Tien Shan. You will camp in spectacular locations, hike to turquoise lakes, climb to panoramic ridges, and even dip into a natural hot spring. Along the way, expect views of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and wildflower-filled meadows — all within reach of the city, but far away from its crowds. This trek is perfect for those seeking multi-day adventure in pristine alpine landscapes with moderate physical challenge and authentic camping experience.

Trail Highlights

Hike through Big Almaty Gorge, one of the most scenic valleys of Ile Alatau.
Stop at Alma-Arasan hot springs, a favorite local spot.
Camp at the unique Terra Glade (2,750 m) surrounded by spruce forest and alpine streams.
Cross the high Almaty-Alagir Pass (3,700 m) with breathtaking views of surrounding glaciers and peaks.
Visit the beautiful Lake Scotland (3,450 m) and Timofeyev Glacier Lake (3,600 m).
Spend nights on Geranium Glade (3,000 m), famous for its fields of wildflowers and panoramic views.
Finish the trek at the emerald jewel of the Tien Shan — Big Almaty Lake (2,510 m).

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

Day 1

Almaty – Big Almaty Gorge – Alma-Arasan – Terra Glade.
Morning transfer from Almaty to Big Almaty Gorge, the southern gateway into Ile Alatau National Park. Start hiking from the parking lot towards the Alma-Arasan sulfur hot spring. Optional swim in the pools and rest. Further the trail climbs steadily through spruce forest, following streams up to the wide-open Terra Glade (2,750 m) — a beautiful campsite surrounded by wildflowers. Setting up the tents, cooking dinner, enjoying the beauty of evening sunlight and towering jagged peaks around.

Elevation gain/loss: +1,050–150 m

Day 2

Terra Glade – Alyosha Bridge – Lake Scotland.
A challenging ascent takes you higher into alpine terrain, leaving the forest behind. Crossing the legendary overhanging Alyosha Bridge, the trail leads to the remote and beautiful Lake Scotland (3,450 m) — a small turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped ridges. Camp at the lakeshore.

Day 3

Lake Scotland – Almaty-Alagir Pass – Ozyornoye Gorge – Geranium Glade.
Today’s highlight is the climb to Almaty-Alagir Pass (3,700 m) — the highest point of the trek. From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Big and Small Almaty Gorges glaciers and peaks. The trail then descends into Ozyornoye Gorge, eventually reaching Geranium Glade (3,000 m) — named for the wild geraniums covering its slopes. Camp on the glade.

Day 4

Geranium Glade – Kyzylsay River – Timofeyev Glacier Lake – Geranium Glade.
A full day hike without moving camp. From Geranium Glade, follow the Kyzylsay River upstream toward the Timofeyev Glacier Lake (3,600 m) — a striking alpine lake fed by glacial streams. After a picnic lunch and time to explore, descend back to Geranium Glade for the second night at the same camp.

Day 5

Geranium Glade – Big Almaty Lake – Almaty.
The final day leads through alpine meadows and down toward the emerald waters of Big Almaty Lake (2,510 m) – one of the most famous landmarks of the region, surrounded by high peaks and spruce forest. After enjoying the views, trail will lead to the Moon Glade and Alpine Rose Hotel Resort via small pass. Transfer back to Almaty.

Accommodation:

Camping in the tents. We recommend to bring your own reliable and light tent for comfortable night staying. Rental is also possible upon request.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

During all days of the program, having passport is required. Part of the route passes boundary line area with Kyrgyzstan Republic.

Depending on weather and snow conditions, the guide can make adjustments to the the program.

It is required to have appropriate insurance policy covering trekking and backcountry in remoted places, including rescue by helicopter.
